Carlo Maria Mariani
Caerimonia
October 30 - November 29, 1997
Opening Reception, Thursday, October 30, from 6 - 8 p.m..
We are pleased to announce our exhibition of Carlo Maria Mariani's new paintings opening
at the gallery on October 30, 1997.
Carlo Maria Mariani is renowned around the world for his unique synthesis of conceptual
and figurative painting. Mariani's canvases are characterized by a sophisticated and often
biting wit which is countered by the extraordinary beauty of his figurative painting. He
is one of the few contemporary painters who instead of merely appropriating or reiterating
the art of the past, his paintings consistently instigate vital and critical dialogues
between classical, modern and contemporary aesthetics. For this reason Mariani's work has
been at the forefront of contemporary painting for over two decades.
Mariani's painting has been the subject of numerous articles and essays by some of the
most important critics and historians including: Donald Kuspit, Edward LucieSmith, Thomas
McEviley, Howard Fox and David Ebony. A fully illustrated catalog, with an essay by David
Bourdon, accompanies the exhibition. Donald Kuspit, in Idiosyncratic Identities
(Cambridge, 1996) describes him as " . . . a conceptualist: he is obsessed by the
idea of beauty - intellectual beauty and the philosophy of beauty - and the classical
bodies he uses are so many exemplifications of it, not physical ends in themselves ... His
pictures are about the failure of modem life and art to give us a sense of self we need
for the long run."
Mariani has represented Italy in the Venice Biennale three times in recent years. His work
has been presented in numerous solo gallery exhibitions in Europe and the United States
including Hirschl & Adler Modem and Sperone Westwater in New York. International
museums such as The Museum of Modem Art, New York; The Pompidou Center, Paris; The
Hirshorn Museum, Washington D.C.; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Documenta VII
in Kassell, Germany; have included his work in major exhibitions. Carlo Maria Mariani
lives and works in New York.
